A Punch In The Face

On October 16th 2004, after the Yankees pummeled the Red Sox in game 3 of the ACLS 19-8, I bet my good friend and Red Sox superfan Ezra Samet 1 punch-in-the-face that the Red Sox would not come back and win the series from the 3-0 deficit. Such a feat had never been accomplished in professional sports and it was my dickish way of gloating about the statistically guaranteed success of the Yankees.

If you weren’t living in a cave in 2004, you’ll remember that the Red Sox did actually come back and win the series in an historic upset. I was officially due one punch-in-the-face.

Petra and I had the pleasure of spending this weekend with Ezra, who is now married and living in Boston, and being the good friend that he is, has not yet punched me in the face. It’s not that he’s forgotten about it, its just that he hasn’t redeemed it yet.

Tonight the Jets were scheduled to play some other team that apparently had a much better chance of winning in some game with some kind of important consequence. The details are not at all important to me, but I had a good feeling about it and got Ezra to go double or nothing on the punch-in-the-face that the Jets would prevail and win the match. Many goals were scored, lots of balls were thrown and kicked, the Jets won, and the punch debt is wiped clean.

Good times this weekend, pal! See you again soon.
