MBA
Something that I have completely omitted from this Web Log for no good reason is that I am going back to school to get my MBA at New York University on a part-time basis. I will remain full-time at BustedTees as the VP Retail; nothing in my professional life will change.
It all started about 16 months ago when on a whim I decided to study and sit for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). I took the exam in October and did extraordinarily well… about 50 points (out of 800) higher than the average at The Harvard Business School. I spoke to every MBA I knew (and some I didn’t know) and decided that taking off two years from work was not a worthwhile opportunity cost. So I researched part-time and executive MBA programs and ended up applying to only one program. I was accepted to the Stern/Langone MBA program at NYU about 72 hours after submitting my application, in part because of two very nice recommendations I got from my bosses, Josh Abramson and Alex Lutz.
Classes start tonight at the Washington Square campus which is about a mile from work and about half a mile from home. It couldn’t possibly be more convenient. I will be in class Mondays and Wednesday from 6-9 for the foreseeable future.
I met my classmates at an orientation a few weekends ago. I am in a “core-group” of 70 people with whom I will take both classes this fall. On the whole, I’ve never met a group of more driven and ambitious people. While at Stuyvesant and Columbia is was easy to find fuck-ups and people who didn’t want to be there, it was clear from just a few hours with my classmates that these people are playing to win, just like me.
Among the group I met another person training for the marathon, a person that coincidentally works for the Transit Authority on the same floor as the CollegeHumor/BustedTees offices, someone that recognized my name from our exhibit at the MAGIC tradeshow last year, and many many more. The group consists of a lot of financial-industry types from Citibank, Morgan Stanley, etc, some consulting types, and many that do more interesting work, though I’m pretty sure my job is the coolest. It was a great reminder of the charmed lives we live at Connected Ventures. “I work at a comedy website in the retail department selling funny t-shirts.”
So, that’s the story! Thanks for reading this long post.
