MacOSX 10.6 - Snow Leopard

Last night I installed the WWDC build of Snow Leopard, the new MacOS. Some initial thoughts after 30 minutes of use:

1. Safari. Of my god. It’s by far the fastest web browser I’ve ever used. Goodbye Firefox, Goodbye Camino. Safari 4 is the shit. It even loads disaster sites like Gizmodo (LOVE the content, hate the site build) very quickly and smoothly. They were not kidding — Safari 4 is where its at.

2. I have 5GB more free space after installation. I needed 5GB free to install, but now I have 10GB free. Pretty rad. No idea how they pulled that off, but they said it would be the case and it is.

3. There are a ton of little enhancements here and there, for example screen captures name themselves smarter now (“Screenshot on 2009-06-12 at 8.58.52 AM.png” vs “Picture 24.png”) and WiFi network selection shows signal strength next to each choice. I’m sure I’ll find tons more as I use it.

4. It’s fast. I don’t have any benchmarking protocols, but it just feels a lot faster.  My old 2+ year old white macbook used to rev its engine and make a load buzz whenever it was working hard (this is actually the sound of fans speeding up uhen its working very hard) but that hasn’t happened yet.

I was seriously considering getting a new MacBook but this OS upgrade will deter me for another year. The only thing its missing is a DVD burner, but Petra’s aluminum macbook has one and that’s good enough for now.
