His prepared speech was about 15 minutes long, with the major theme of not letting stuttering define us or limit what we could be or do. As a person who stuttered well into his 20’s, he told us to resist letting others’ opinions or judgments of us be confused with who we really are. He implored us to focus on the fact that the speed with which we speak, or the number of interruptions in our utterances, does not have any bearing on the integrity of who we are, on the quality of our thoughts, ideas and intellects, and on our value as people. He told us it was vital to believe in ourselves, and to have other people believe in us and what we are capable of.
